The greater St Francis Bay area offers a plethora of activities that cater to a wide range of interests, from water sports and golfing to hiking and annual festivals. Here’s a detailed look at what visitors can enjoy in this picturesque region:

Water Sports

Surfing:

Seal Point: Known for its world-class right-hand point break, Seal Point is a hotspot for surfers.

Kitesurfing:

Hobie Beach: Ideal for kite surfing with consistent winds and safe launching areas.

Kayaking and Canoeing:

Kromme River: Paddle along the scenic Kromme River, which is perfect for beginners and experienced kayakers alike.

Golfing

Bunkers, lakes, long drives and beautifully tendered greens draw golfers to the area year after year!

The area also offers 2 outstanding, and very different, golf courses. Play 9 holes or the full course, either at St Francis bay golf club or St Francis Links.

Firstly, there is ‘The St Francis Bay Golf Club’ situated within the heart of the picturesque village of St Francis.

’St Francis Links’, the second course may not have been grazing land for sheep and rabbits, but a natural course between the beach and arable land it is. ’St Francis Links’ challenges all who play it and rewards those who respect it.

Cape St Francis River Break Cruise

Experience a full day of relaxation with the ‘River Break’ excursion, starting with a scenic cruise through the St Francis Canals and into the Kromme River conservancy, home to a variety of bird species like Fish Eagles and Kingfishers. Continue along the Geelhout River to a private farm, where you can unwind by the pool, paddle in a canoe, explore fynbos trails, or enjoy a farm-to-fork organic lunch.

Perfect for team-building, birthdays, corporate outings, or family gatherings, the excursion requires a minimum of 8 people for booking.

Hiking

 The Chokka Trail:

The 62km trail lies between Oyster Bay, St Francis Bay and Cape St Francis, however, in true slackpacking style (you hike with a small daypack while your luggage is transported), distances can be shortened and casual evacuations are possible if and when needed (for example older hikers or families with young children).

Trail owners Eric and Esti Stewart chose three unique privately owned overnight points to make sure your day starts with a hearty breakfast, your packed lunch is delicious and at your next destination, a cooked meal, hot shower and cold beer will be waiting!

Whether you are a seasoned hiker or novice, or only “lifestyle fit”, you will enjoy this diverse hike. All you need is good hiking shoes, a small comfortable day pack and enough bottles or camel back for water.

Whale & dolphin watching

From June to November, embark on an unforgettable whale-watching adventure along the “Whale Highway” (W1) for close encounters with Humpback and Southern Right Whales. Departing from Port St Francis, a short boat ride takes you to the heart of the action, where the skipper searches for splashes, blows, and full-body breaches. St Francis Bay’s only licensed whale-watching operator offers the chance to see these majestic creatures up close, along with the endangered Humpback dolphins, common dolphins, penguins, seals, and other marine life. This 1.5- to 2-hour trip is a must for marine enthusiasts!

Calamari Tasting

Squid or Ink Fish is served globally and better known as Calamari. The local species, Loligo Reynaudii, is referred to as Chokka and has become a sought-after delicacy worldwide.

This was not always the case and it was only in the early 80’s that it was realised that there was a market for Chokka and an industry developed. Before that the Chokka was caught and used mainly as bait by line fishermen.

Experience the rich flavours and history of calamari in St Francis.  Embark on the Calamari Route and indulge in the best Calamari South Africa has to offer.
